KG based in Vettelschoß, in the Rhineland-Palatinate near Bonn, develops and distributes high-quality sandals, shoes and footbed insoles as well as foot and shoe care products worldwide. In 1925 the production of the so-called Blue Footbed begun, a flexible cork-latex-insole for shoes. At the beginning of the 60s Karl Birkenstock developed and produced the first pairs of sandals which would later be world-famous: todays Madrid model which was then called the gym sandal.

The basic philosophy behind every Birkenstock generation is to use nature as our guide in order to promote and preserve the foot's natural role.
