5 Steps to Being Hipster
Mastering the ‘Hipster’ Look has never been so Simple
Feeling out of place in your local coffee shop? Wondering if you dress like a hipster? Say what you will about hipster style, but the too-cool-for-school look is becoming increasingly popular in the U.K.
Most people may think this look is easy to master. You just throw on a pair of skinny black jeans and a baggy tee… right? Wrong. Mastering the hipster edge is much more complicated than simply dressing like one. So we’ve put together a list of the top 5 things you need to know to pull off hipster style.
1. Avoid all things mainstream
This means that big-name clothing brands like Ralph Lauren, Lacoste and Lyle & Scott are off limits. This is important for two reasons: it emphasizes your individuality and shows that you are “anti-big-business”. Instead opt for clothing brands such as Religion, Vans or NICCE to give you some individuality. The range of attire these brands have on offer has a unique feel, with limited editions, a wide range of styles & colours and are designed for a more edgy look.
2. Get skinny
A pair of skinny black jeans is a staple in any hipster’s wardrobe. The rule with this is the skinnier the better. If you can get away with wearing your sister’s jeans, do it! You want grip from groin to toe. And don’t worry about “not pulling it off.” That’s part of the idea. In not pulling it off, you will be pulling it off. If you’re looking for the best brand for skinny jeans has to be Levis. Hipster or not, their collection is so huge you can’t go wrong.
3. Layer up
Layers are a good way to work in combinations. Especially in the winter months (as it will keep you warm too). Jumpers can go on top of anything and coats can go on top of jumpers, giving you layers. Sweaters, long sleeves, and baggy jackets, it all gives more options to be ironic. Denim jackets are a good option, and the go-to brand for this would also have to be Levis.
4. Add some colour
Mismatch colours as much as you damn well please. The more colours in your wardrobe the better, and if they’re vivid or patterned, all the more reason to don them while taking photos with your old-school camera. The best brand for tees is without a doubt Religion Clothing. With an array of different prints, colours, shapes and sizes, these guys have you covered.
5. Accessorize
Hipsters will have a wide range of accessories to choose from in their wardrobe. From geek-style glasses (with no lenses may we add), pendants of unexpected objects (such as owls or octopi), headbands, loop earrings, or anything that will draw attention (without looking like you’re trying to draw attention). A bucket hat is also true hipster style, and we love this one by Aquascutum.
So to sum it up, wearing slim-fitted jeans, lots of layers, colour and accessories and you’ll be further on your way to reach your desired hipster look. The most important thing is to own the look, make it your own, and more importantly #StandOut.
