How to Rock the Cardigan
Cardigans can be worn smart, casual or even smart-casually, as pointed out by every derivative style guide ever but we’re going to tell you how to rock the cardigan this winter in the best way possible!
Firstly, don’t let anyone tell you that cardigans aren’t manly. If you’re a man who’s never worn a cardigan you’re cheating yourself out of a useful addition to the wardrobe. Relax, stop worrying about whether it looks masculine or not, and learn to wear the soft, open-fronted sweater like a gentleman.
Let’s talk style first.
Your first tip will be the fit: anything too tight against the skin is probably meant for ladies. The shoulder seams should end on top of your shoulder – if they’re coming down your bicep at all the sweater’s too big. The bottom hem should cover your waistline but not your trouser pockets. It should button tight enough that you don’t get a big sag in front of your body any time you bend forward.
A chunky knit cardigan is the perfect casual piece and easily enables the wearer to play around with colours and geometric patterns. Because of its punchy, stylised look, this cardigan is great for throwing over simple pieces and taking centre stage. Buy an upscale one in cashmere or merino, or keep things budget friendly with a wool mix for a rugged feel.
Finally, when you’re working out how to rock the cardigan look, deciding on colours is really the simplest part. Black, browns, plums and khaki’s are perfect for winter, whereas burnt orange, mustard, tan and beige will brighten up your spring/summer wardrobe. Keep in mind that some colours are appropriate for certain occasions, and others aren’t. So if you’re getting ready for a first date, it’s probably best to save that bright red cardi for another time.
Our only true advice is to know your history and stop letting what others think determine how you dress. Cardigans are a classic and should be a core item in your wardrobe.
