New Year, New You – Fartlek Fat Burner

Stats over at www.statisticsbrain.com have found that 58% of people make New Year’s resolutions.

A staggering 21.4% of those people aim to lose weight, whilst 5.5% of those aim to work out more regularly. So it seems quite clear that after a few weeks of over indulgence our thoughts turn to how we are going to burn off those extra few pigs in blankets we ate on Christmas Day.

It comes as no surprise that one of the most popular activities people take up after the festive season is running; however, a common mistake that many people make is to spend hours upon hours on the streets in an attempt to lose weight. Whilst cardio is good for you and dedicating a long period of time to running will certainly yield results what people tend to forget is that our bodies are superb at adapting. And, unless you are changing things up regularly your results will start to slow down or at worst come to a halt.

The Remedy
The remedy for this… Fartlek training!

Fartlek = speed play in Swedish is a combination of continuous and interval training. In laymen’s terms you mix high intensity (fast) running with periods of low intensity (slow) running. Fartlek training is generally unstructured which provides a fun challenge without having to spend hours to get results. By continually changing the intensity you are forcing your body to adapt to the changing situation which has been proven to boost weight loss.

Whether you are a seasoned runner or a novice just starting out Fartlek training is a great weapon to have in your arsenal. Here is a very simple Fartlek training session you could get started with today.

Landmarks
Whilst out on your next run select common landmarks to use as markers to change pace, for example lamp posts. Sprint at full intensity between two lamp posts, jog at 30% intensity between the next two lamp posts and then raise that to 70% between the next set of two on your journey. Continue to repeat this change of intensity for the desired amount of time (we would suggest around 20 minutes) and start to notice big changes in your weight loss and performance.

Once you have completed your training and are looking for the perfect outfit to recover why not take a look at the fantastic new range from Gym King.
