In todays modern world we consume more food than ever before.

The UK has been uncovered as the second most obese nation in Europe and there is a staggering 1 in 4 chance of suffering from a heart attack.

Now, whilst these facts are both shocking and unfortunately true, there is a lot that we can do to change that and improve our lives for the better.

Whether you are on a quest to shed some weight, build lean muscle, or improve the quality of your hair and skin it has been proven that superfoods are the way forward.

Superfoods are described by nutritionists as being any food with a high density of beneficial nutrients, proven health benefits, and no or relatively few adverse properties. With a huge amount of research being focused on superfoods it seems that there are new foods being added to the list every week. In order to help you decipher what you should be eating we have compiled a list of our top 5.

Salmon
Oily fish has long been regarded as one of the world’s greatest superfoods and Salmon is starting to top that list. Extremely rich in protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, salmon is proven to be a hit with bodybuilders and athletes around the world. Not only does salmon improve cardiovascular function, it also, increases brain function and the essential oils found in salmon provide your hair and skin with essential nutrients look fresh and healthy.

Avocado
This naughty green little number packs a punch when it comes to Omega 3s and essential fats. Avocados have been linked to reducing cancer, lowering cholesterol and improved cardiovascular function. There is also a strong link between avocados and improved eyesight. In our eyes… they’re a winner!

Sweet Potato

The most complex of starchy carbohydrates. Unfortunately when you fry these you lose a lot of the amazing nutritional benefits. Eat them clean (either boiled or oven baked) and reap the benefits.

Sweet potato helps to maintain blood sugar levels and therefore increases energy levels. They also pack a lot of fiber which make them great for digestion and they have a high count of magnesium which has been proven to help us de-stress and calm down.

Berries
Among fitness gurus berries are seen to be the God fruit. Jam packed with antioxidants and anti inflammatory properties these little bad boys supply the body with a heap of vitamins. Just a handful of berries are a potent concoction of nutrients that can help your muscles regenerate, reduce ageing and fight cancers. Berries have been seen to improve brain function also.

Remember, when picking the fruit, the darker the berry the healthier it is.

Quinoa
Quinoa pronounced Keen-Wah is one of the most tremendous superfoods around. It is the seeds of flowering plants that generally survive in some of the most harsh environments. It is also full of protein, minerals, fiber and essential fats. Quinoa is also gluten free which is great for your digestive system and leads to feeling fuller for longer.

This super little grain has been proven to reduce cardiovascular disease, boost your immune system and is great for anyone with high blood pressure or Type II diabetes.

It’s important to remember that we are what we eat and no diet works the same for any two people. What we can control is the quality of the food we put inside our bodies and in order to live a healthy, happy life you should try and eat as many superfoods as possible.
