The Denim Jacket Guide
The Denim Jacket
Since the dawn of the modern era denim has been a hot fashion item. Whether it’s in the form of jeans, jackets, shorts or shirts, we have seen a variety of different styles through each generation to keep denim as one of the most popular fabrics on the market.
One of the most in demand pieces of menswear at the minute is the denim jacket AKA the jean jacket (if you are a 90s child).
What is a Denim Jacket?
The denim jacket first erupted on to the market in the 1880s when it was first designed and created by none other than the legend Levi Strauss. Its first use, however, was not for fashion. The denim jacket was designed as a rugged, durable menswear item for labourers, rail road workers and cowboys and was popular due to its hardwearing material.
Like most popular utility garments, it wasn’t long before the design evolved and we started to see it on the runway. Since its inception the denim jacket has been donned by many and we have witnessed style icons such as James Dean, John Lennon and David Beckham all pull on the denim jacket on more than one occasion.
Today a denim jacket is an extremely versatile piece and one that you will certainly get your money’s worth out of. The denim jacket, if styled correctly, can be utilized for any occasion. The Shearling Jacket
What is a Shearling Jacket?
As you know, the denim jacket has evolved and now comes in a variety of different styles. An extremely popular (and slightly different) style is the shearling jacket. This is a normal denim jacket with a wool lining that often lines the inside of the jacket and collar.
We particularly like the shearling jackets, especially during the colder months as they provide added warmth with just as much style.
How to Style a Denim Jacket
A denim jacket can be styled to suit any occasion and because of its versatility it can almost certainly be teamed with anything. We think it would be hard to make a denim jacket look bad, but, here are our favourite combinations.
Denim Jacket with a White T-Shirt
The classic look, James Dean debonair, a denim jacket with a white tee underneath oozes sex appeal and it is a style that you will want to get right.
Whilst the plain white tee seems like it should be a walk in the park it is important to remember to select the correct size and fit to ensure you pull of this look correctly. You want your jacket to be a different layer and therefore a different fit. So, if you have gone for the oversized style jacket, then aim to have a slightly more fitted tee to give your outfit some texture.
Denim Jacket with Black Jeans
Denim on denim can be a great look, but it’s very rarely achieved from the normal human being. Most of the people I’ve witnessed wearing denim on denim often look like they’ve fallen into the off cuts at the Levis factory when the lights were off. The desired look can be achieved, but we warn you, it is a difficult one to pull off.
However, there is a very simple solution to this dilemma. Denim and black make a super combination. The colours complement each other and provide a good contrast to your outfit. This is a winning combo!
Layering with a Denim Jacket
The denim jacket does not always have to be the outer piece of your outfit as it can also work extremely well as the layer. What is important to remember here is that the fit has to be spot on, but should you get it right then you won’t look back.
How to Layer a Denim Jacket
Start with a slim fit denim jacket and wear this with a few buttons fastened, underneath an overcoat. Wool overcoats are particularly good to team with denim as they create contrast with the use of varying fabrics.
Denim Jacket Rules
The denim jacket is a master of versatility. Despite our favourite looks listed above, there are still hundreds of different ways that the denim jacket can be styled. Whether it’s with chinos or trousers for a smart occasion or with joggers for a laid-back look. Either way, denim jackets pack a punch when it comes to style and were sure that they will grace our catwalks forever. Head over to #StandOut to take a look at our collection here.
