Best known for their classic yellow boot, Timberland is an American manufacturer and retailer of outdoors wear with a focus on footwear. Founded in 1918 in Boston, Massachusetts Timberland has been a family run company from the beginning. Next year they will be celebrating 100 years of distinctive fashion so, we only think it’s fair to take a look at what has made Timberland such an iconic company.
Despite the company being founded in 1918 the manufacturing of their most distinctive yellow boot didn’t begin until the 1960’s after Nathan Swartz, Timberland’s founder, had bought all shares in the Boston-based Abington shoe company and became the sole owner. After this, Swartz brought his sons into the company and in 1965 began to make their classic waterproof boots.
These boots were made by the, then innovative, injection-molding technique that enabled the boots to be waterproof by connecting the soles to the leather uppers without the need for stitching.
It was only in 1973 that the company name was officially changed to The Timberland Company, the brand name Timberland had been introduced for the waterproof leather boots the company produced and due to their popularity, the company name was officially changed. Over the next decade, the company introduced a line of casual and boat shoes and by 1985 over 1 million pairs of Timberlands had been sold. The company continued to expand its product lines by releasing backpacks, watches and kids’ footwear. Now 99 years later Timberland is a popular household name loved by men, women and, children of all ages.
How to wear yours
Despite being primarily known as a work boot, Timberlands can be worn with practically anything. With a wide range of colors and styles there is a Timberland boot for every occasion.
For a casual day look we recommend Timberland Wheat Waterbuck Radford 6-inch boots paired with slim leg jeans and a white shirt. If you’re feeling more adventurous then team them with a flannel shirt for the perfect outdoors-man vibe.
However, if you’re going somewhere with a stricter dress code we would go with the Timberland Brown Larchmont Chelsea boot, a classic take on the Chelsea boot with a Timberland twist.
